Nearly two-thirds (63%) of students are currently working, whether full-time, part-time, internships/coops, or even a combination of these jobs. On average, students work 19 hours a week.
Most students work to pay their living expenses (69%), for extra spending cash (52%), and 38% use money earned to contribute to tuition. Common expenses that students have include rent, internet, cell phone, gas for car, and groceries.
However, money isn’t the only reason students are working. Other top reasons to work were to build their resume (33%), and gain experience in their field (24%). Nearly half (48%) are already working a job that relates to their field of study/future career.
Interestingly, when asked if they would still work even if they could afford not to, 53% of students indicated that they would still work.
